Vernon Akins
Vice President / General Manager
Vernon Akins has been in facility and personnel management for over 25 years and has spent the last 10 years with HeartShare Training Services Inc. His background includes extensive work in Healthcare Security Administration, Public Safety Administration, Corporate Investigation Management and Healthcare Training Management.

Vernon holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Youngstown State University. His experience and training help him to manage over 150 instructors who train over 16,000 students every year.

Additionally, Vernon manages all daily operations, strategic planning, and has been recognized for his outstanding management and leadership qualities. Vernon is also closely involved with accounting, class coordination, marketing research, quality assurance and client relations.

Tim Fagin
Joe Toscano, MD
Medical Director / Instructor / Training Center Faculty

Joseph Toscano, MD received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in 1989 and trained in internal medicine at the Naval Hospital in San Diego. He has worked in the areas of emergency medicine and urgent care for over fifteen years.

He has been an attending emergency physician at San Ramon Regional Medical Center in San Ramon, California since 1999 and is an instructor in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.

In addition to caring for patients, he is senior research editor for Emergency Medicine Practice, a monthly, evidence-based, emergency medicine CME publication. He is a member of the editorial boards for the journals, Emergency Medicine and the Journal of Urgent Care Medicine, and develops and reviews continuing medical education material for a variety of other publications and organizations. He is a founding board member of both the Urgent Care College of Physicians and the Board of Certification in Urgent Care Medicine.

Jane Folena RN, BSN
NRP and STABLE Program Director

Jane Folena is a graduate of the University of San Francisco School of Nursing. Jane has over 30 years of clinical experience as a staff nurse and Clinical Educator in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. As a clinical educator, Jane was responsible for the development and implementation of NICU training programs, NICU Critical Events Training and staff’s continued education.

Jane is an American Heart Association BLS instructor, S.T.A.B.L.E. lead instructor and has been a Regional NRP instructor since 1997.

Jane enjoys training healthcare providers and teaching infant care to parents through Mission College Community Education.

Mary Wiens
Administrative Assistant / Account Specialist

Mary Wiens has been with HeartShare Training Services Inc. for almost 15 years. Her current responsibilities include purchasing and distribution, inventory, registrations and payroll. Her combined experience and skills make her an invaluable asset to the HeartShare team. Mary quite frequently goes above and beyond to meet the needs of each individual student.

Amanda Fletcher
Office Manager / Account Specialist

Amanda Fletcher has been with HeartShare Training Services Inc. for over six years in the role of Administrative Specialist. Her current responsibilities include registrations, managing phones, client relations, sales and finalization of class rosters. Amanda is quite frequently the smiling face on the opposite end of your phone calls.

North-Bay Faculty

Ben VanParis
North Bay Training Site Lead Instructor

Ben Van Paris RRT-NPS has been in the healthcare field over 30 years and has 27 years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Ben holds a certification from the National Board for Respiratory Care as a Neonatal Pediatric Specialist.

In addition, Ben is an American Heart Association ACLS, PALS and BLS instructor and is also certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics as a NRP instructor.

John Yap
North Bay Training Site Lead Instructor

John Yap has 20 years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. He has always enjoyed teaching.

John is a certified American Heart Association instructor for ACLS, BLS and PALS. He recently joined the team at HeartShare Training Services Inc. and brings his knowledge and enthusiasm for teaching with him.
